Tell me how to slaughter memories
Because I’m more scared of them
Than ghosts, monsters and terrorists
They have a way of creeping up on you
Like a shadow you can never escape
Just when you thought you fled the past
It comes, sudden and unannounced,
To make your heartbeat stagger and quiver
Sometimes all it takes is a familiar sight
Of mountains and sunsets and cobbled walks
To undo all those years spent on letting go
Ach…!

I wish I had the answer to this…old memories can be so uncomfortable. From a theoretical standpoint I know it’s probably best to let ourselves feel the emotions they trigger: while acknowledging that the past is the past and feelings are just feelings. But in practice this is very hard to do.

They are. I think it was Nizar Qabbani who said, “The most dangerous heart disease: strong memory.” And yes, it is easier said than done to acknowledge the past and let feelings be feelings. I believe it gets better with time though. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Josh. 🙂

This reminds of the reason why most of us can’t get over a lost love. When someone leaves us…we grieve… we cry… its really hard not to be with them anymore…but sometimes i think is it really the love we lost that we are crying about; or is it the memories that make us cry harder?

Good question, Michnavs. I think it’s a little of both. But memories make it more difficult to deal with the pain. Sometimes, they can make our grief unbearable.

Oh, they can be a source of nostalgia. There are chosen ones I keep in my memory bank so I can go back to them again.
Thanks for the visit! 🙂
