This is How I Love You

When I tell you I love you
It will not be a benediction
It will not spring from my chest
Like a breath I’m holding
And letting loose into a sigh

When I tell you I love you
It will not be proverbial
It will not hold the weight of the years
We spent running back and forth
Between precipice and paradise

When I tell you I love you
It will not be a rebellion
An act of defiance against fortuity
That created an impassable gulf
Where certainty used to be

When I tell you I love you
It will not be for reciprocity
I am not giving you my soul
So you will hand yours in a cage
And I can keep it hostage for eternity

When I tell you I love you
It will not come out as poetry
It will not echo Tagore, Neruda, or Qabbani
The words will unfurl like the break of dawn
But they will not make you immortal

My I love you
Is neither a threat nor a promise
It is not meant to delight or surprise
My I love you
Is a truth that needs no supplement

  1. I apologize for being a poor follower & lousy commenter. I really don’t read much, but mostly because I’m legally blind, however, that isn’t much of an excuse. This is beautiful. One of those things that I wish I had written, or may have written in another life. It is certainly publishable and you should shop it to some periodicals. Every once in a while, magic flows from our fingers, so much so, that we tend to put our own writing on hold because we just can’t believe that it came out of us the way it did. Sometimes–we can’t follow our own act, but this is outstanding and you should shop it to some poetry e-zines. They would be foolish not to accept it.

    1. Hi, Charlie. That is alright. I myself have been away from this sphere for so long I have a lot of catching up to do. Thank you for taking the time to read, and thank you most especially for the wonderful words. They make my heart flutter. I will try and find periodicals I can send this to. I wish you a lovely Sunday. ❀️
